About 

Dr David Cain is a Consultant in Critical / Intensive Care and Anaesthesia at Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust, with prior consultant experience at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and HCA Healthcare London.


He is Deputy Director for the South-West Critical Care Network and Chief Medical Information Officer for Royal Cornwall Hospital.


His clinical leadership includes roles in Paediatric Critical Care, Clinical Governance, Infection Control, Morbidity & Mortality, and Organ Donation, alongside his work as a Transfer Consultant for the South-West Critical Care Transfer Service.


Dr Cain trained in London and Edinburgh, completing his MD (Res) at University College London.

Dr Cain is actively involved in clinical research and teaching, serving as Chief Investigator for studies on paediatric bronchiolitis and COVID-19, and as Lead Investigator for the PEACH Service evaluation of critical-care bed utilisation across South-West England.​

Expert Witness & Report Preparation Experience

Dr Cain’s medico-legal work includes matters concerning peri-operative complications, recognition and escalation of the deteriorating patient, sepsis and multi-organ failure, critical-care transfer decisions, and intensive-care governance issues.

He prepares expert reports for both Claimants and Defendants across clinical negligence and public liability matters, including screening, breach of duty and causation opinions.

Dr Cain has undertaken formal Bond Solon training in Excellence in Report Writing and Courtroom Skills and is registered with AvMA following independent review of his work.

Turn Around Times

Dr Cain aims to provide reports promptly and efficiently. Typical turnaround times are: 10–14 working days for standard cases • 14–21 working days for complex cases • 5–10 working days for urgent cases.

Payment Terms

Our standard payment terms are 90 days from the date of invoice. However, we understand the funding structures within medico-legal work and are able to agree extended payment arrangements, where appropriate, subject to written agreement at the point of instruction and internal compliance checks. Extended arrangements may be agreed for up to 36 months depending on the nature of the matter and the instructing firm.
